UNDERSTANDING THE GOSPEL

OPENING PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing Yourself through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Open the eyes of my heart as I meditate on the truth of the Gospel. Help me to move beyond simply knowing about Christ to truly knowing Him. Let the power of His finished work transform my life, strengthen my faith, and deepen my love for You. May Your Spirit reveal the beauty of the cross and the hope of the resurrection as I continue this journey of becoming. In Jesus' name, Amen.

DEVOTIONAL READING

Every meaningful relationship begins with knowing the person behind it. Likewise, our journey of becoming begins with understanding the One who has called us into fellowship with Himself. We cannot truly know God apart from Jesus Christ, for He is the perfect and complete revelation of the Father.

The Gospel is far more than a message to be heard; it is the revelation of God's heart toward humanity. Whenever the Gospel is faithfully preached, it points us to Jesus Christ because He is the visible expression of the invisible God. Through Him, we discover not only who God is but also who we were created to become.

Hebrews 1:1–3 AMP ‘1God, having spoken to the fathers long ago in [the voices and writings of] the prophets in many separate revelations [each of which set forth a portion of the truth], and in many ways, has in these last days spoken [with finality] to us in [the person of One who is by His character and nature] His Son [namely Jesus], whom He appointed heir and lawful owner of all things, through whom also He created the universe [that is, the universe as a space-time-matter continuum]. 3. The Son is the radiance and only expression of the glory of [our awesome] God [reflecting God’s Shekinah glory, the Light-being, the brilliant light of the divine], and the exact representation and perfect imprint of His [Father’s] essence, and upholding and maintaining and propelling all things [the entire physical and spiritual universe] by His powerful word [carrying the universe along to its predetermined goal]. When He [Himself and no other] had [by offering Himself on the cross as a sacrifice for sin] accomplished purification from sins and established our freedom from guilt, He sat down [revealing His completed work] at the right hand of the Majesty on high [revealing His Divine authority],’

This passage reminds us that throughout history God spoke through prophets in many different ways, but in these last days He has spoken fully through His Son. Jesus is not merely another messenger sent from God; He is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His nature. When we look at Christ, we see the Father's love, holiness, mercy, wisdom, and power perfectly displayed.

For this reason, the Gospel must always remain Christ-centered. Christianity is not built upon philosophies, traditions, or human wisdom. It is built upon the person of Jesus Christ.

As believers, we are called to proclaim Him above everything else.

1 Corinthians 1:23–24 AMP '23 'But we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the [miracle-working] power of God and the [true] wisdom of God.’

The Apostle Paul reminds us that while the message of Christ crucified may seem foolish to some, it is the very power and wisdom of God to those who believe. The cross stands at the center of the Gospel because it reveals both the seriousness of sin and the immeasurable depth of God's love.

Yet the Gospel does not end at the cross.

It also proclaims the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ—the completed work through which humanity was redeemed and restored to God.

1 Corinthians 15:3–4 AMP ‘3 For I passed on to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to [that which] the Scriptures [foretold], [Is 53:5-12] 4 and that He was buried, and that He was [bodily] raised on the third day according to [that which] the Scriptures [foretold], [Ps 16:9, 10]’.

These events are not merely historical facts to be remembered; they are the foundation upon which every believer's life is built.

The death of Christ accomplished our redemption. He willingly bore the penalty that we deserved so that we could be reconciled to the Father.

His burial signifies the end of the old life. Through Christ, our former identity—marked by sin, separation, and spiritual death—has been put away.

His resurrection declares victory over sin, death, and the grave. Because Christ lives, everyone who places their faith in Him receives new life and the hope of eternal fellowship with God.

This is the beauty of the Gospel.

It is not simply advice for better living. It is God's power to save, restore, and transform.

Many people hear about Jesus without truly encountering Him. They may know facts about His life, understand Christian doctrine, or participate in religious activities, yet never experience the life-changing reality of the Gospel.

There is a profound difference between knowing about Christ and knowing Christ personally.

The Gospel reveals that humanity could never save itself. No amount of moral effort, religious observance, intellectual achievement, or personal discipline could bridge the gap created by sin. Our greatest need required God's greatest gift.

That gift is Jesus Christ.

Through His finished work, the Father has made a way for every person to be forgiven, adopted into His family, and transformed into His likeness.

Every believer must continually return to this truth.

Our confidence is not rooted in our own performance but in Christ's finished work.

Our hope is not found in human ability but in His resurrection power.

Our identity is not determined by our past but by what He accomplished at Calvary.

The Gospel is not merely the beginning of the Christian life.

It is the foundation upon which every day of the Christian life is built.

The more deeply we understand Jesus Christ, the more fully we discover the heart of the Father.

REFLECTION

The Gospel is not simply the doorway into Christianity; it is the atmosphere in which believers continue to live.

Sometimes we become so familiar with the message of the cross that we no longer pause to marvel at its significance. Yet every day we stand completely dependent upon the grace that Christ secured through His death and resurrection.

The Father did not send Jesus merely to improve our lives.

He sent Him to give us new life.

The more we behold Christ, the more we understand God's character, His love, and His eternal purpose for us.

Today, pause and reflect on the incredible gift of salvation. Let gratitude replace routine and let worship rise from a heart that remembers what Christ has done.

HEART CHECK

• Is my understanding of the Gospel rooted in a relationship with Jesus or merely in religious knowledge?
• Do I truly believe that Christ's finished work is sufficient for my salvation?
• Have I allowed the wonder of the cross to become ordinary?
• Am I living each day in the freedom Christ purchased for me?
• How does the resurrection of Jesus shape the way I live today?

FAITH DECLARATION

I believe that Jesus Christ is the perfect revelation of the Father.

His finished work is complete and sufficient.

Because He died, I have been redeemed.

Because He was buried, my old life has passed away.

Because He rose again, I walk in newness of life.

I will build my life upon Christ alone, and I will faithfully proclaim His Gospel to my generation.

LIVING THE WORD

Spend time this week meditating on the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Rather than reading these truths quickly, thank God specifically for what each one has accomplished in your life:

• Thank Him for the forgiveness purchased through the cross.
• Thank Him that your old life has been buried with Christ.
• Thank Him that His resurrection power is at work within you today.

Allow gratitude to deepen your love for the One who gave everything for your salvation.

PRAY WITH ME

Father,

Thank You for revealing Yourself through Jesus Christ. Thank You for loving me enough to send Your Son to redeem me and restore me to Yourself.

Help me never to lose sight of the beauty and power of the Gospel. Keep the cross ever before my eyes and remind me daily that my hope rests entirely in the finished work of Christ.

Teach me to know Jesus more deeply and to reflect His character in every area of my life. May His death continually remind me of Your great love, His burial reminds me that my old life is gone, and His resurrection fills me with confidence to walk in the victory You have given me.

Strengthen my faith so that I will boldly proclaim Christ and faithfully live as a witness of His transforming power.

May my life always point others to Jesus.

The Gospel is not merely the message that brings us to Christ—it is the truth that continually transforms us into His likeness.
